I wouldn't be surprised if it sells out in some places, some camping out may not be as crazy as it sounds!

9,000 people is a tiny, tiny drop in the ocean compared to how many people want it, I'm sure. I think the only reason the Spore server wasn't knocked off the internet earlier (it seems to be down right now! :( ) is that Spore isn't a hardcore gamer's game. I'm expecting that a lot of fans of The Sims 2 will be interested in this, but they're not necessarily savvy enough to be able to find it early.

Once it starts coming out on coverdisks and official download sites I wouldn't be surprised if 9,000 people register per hour. ;)
Maybe not quite that many. But the word of mouth is getting out based on the demo and the word seems to be that it is very, very good. And with the demo being a fairly small file in comparison to other modern games, the barrier to entry is much lower...

Tuesday is going to be nuts. :)

They could have made the deal with the magazine too, magazines like to have exclusive early access to stuff to sell numbers. Of course, if they did, they either didn't expect anybody to upload it from the magazine (given it's a free demo I don't know why they wouldn't expect that), or they decided to use it as a stress test. 9000 people is small compared to those who should have it on Tuesday I imagine.

Probably so that they could have enough servers ready and the bandwidth ordered and so on.
The Sporepedia and Spore site in general has slowed to a crawl very often in the last couple of hours as the place gets totally overwhelmed. Things seem to be levelling off now but it's unclear whether more servers have been brought online or all the really heavy users have gone to bed or school/work.

well if the program was ready to launch i don't see why they held back for so long. Its like they are dangling a carrot in front of our nose while we just sit back twitching to use it.
